Event date: Update rollout announced on 6 October; availability varies by device.

Google has released Chrome 155 with 247 security fixes, including four rated critical. The desktop update was announced on 6 October and received further coverage on 7 October. It is rolling out over the following days and weeks, so availability can differ between devices.

The critical problems are described as “use-after-free” flaws in the Chromecast, Browser, Navigation and Track components. In plain English, software tries to use a piece of computer memory after it has already released it. That mistake can cause crashes and, in some circumstances, give an attacker a way to interfere with how the program runs. Google restricts some technical details while users receive the fixes.

The announced desktop versions are 155.0.8059.39/.40 for Windows and macOS, and 155.0.8059.39 for Linux. Google’s release notice also says the corresponding Android release contains the same security fixes unless otherwise stated. This does not mean every Chrome user has been attacked: the announcement does not report these particular flaws being exploited in the wild.

Browsers handle shopping, email, banking and business applications, so keeping them current protects an important part of everyday online activity. The useful action is straightforward. On Windows or Mac, open Chrome’s menu, choose Help, then About Google Chrome, and allow any available update to download. Select Relaunch to finish applying it. Save unfinished work first.

Linux users should follow their package manager’s update process. On managed business devices, ask IT to confirm that the update has actually been installed, rather than assuming a downloaded update is already active.
